Abstract:
This ethics memo is a paper evaluating the “Serve Our Users” section of Google’s code of conduct. “Serve Our Users” is a section that states Google’s policies when interacting with users and their personal data. In my paper, I summarize and analyze the purpose, background, and context of this section of Google’s code of conduct. I conclude that the main focus of this section is to instruct Google employees to maintain user’s trust, be accessible to customers, try to fix any issues users report, and protect user’s data from illegal third parties. Google reinforces these ideas throughout this section to make it clear to its employees, staff, and users that one of its top priorities is to serve its users.

Subject: Evaluation of the “Serve Our Users” section of Google’s Code of Conduct
The purpose of this report is to provide my evaluation of the “Serve Our Users” section of Google’s Code of Conduct. The section gives an idea of Google’s approach when it comes to interacting with users and their personal information. Additionally, it gives Google’s employees instructions on how to best represent their company when interacting with users and using private information of users.
Google has a very basic Code of Conduct that mainly encourages maintaining user’s trust and usage of Google’s products and services while reinforcing ethical standards and lawful behavior. The code of conduct is divided into seven sections. Each section provides specific details that give guidelines on company policies.
I was tasked with evaluating a section of Google’s Code of Conduct. I chose to evaluate the “Serve Our Users” section. This section has five subsections: Integrity, Usefulness, Privacy (Security and Freedom of Expression), Responsiveness, and Take Action.
In each subsection, Google reinforces the idea of maintaining user’s trust, being accessible to customers, and trying to fix any issues users may have. Google wants to allow users to have unbiased access to information. They also emphasize protecting user’s privacy, security and preventing unauthorized access to their information.
The main message to take away from “Serve Our Users” is Google’s general motto: “don’t be evil.” Google encourages employees to be kind and respectful with customers and heavily discourages misusing user’s information.
In closing, thank you for your time. If I may provide additional information, please contact me by phone at 929-303-2970 or by email at [email protected].
