Writing for Engineering

May 20, 2020

Over the course of this semester, I have achieved my course learning objective by practicing and improving my writing through the papers I have written. I have used my range of linguistic differences as a resource by using my own vocabulary and writing style to write papers with my authentic voice. This has helped me develop a rhetorical sensibility by allowing me to utilize my knowledge of writing to create a consistent writing style for myself. I have enhanced my strategies for reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment by practicing them throughout the semester when completing various assignments. I have read about different writing styles from the coursebook, I have drafted, revised, and edited my assignments multiple times to improve them and I have self-assessed my work to see what I did right and where I can improve. I have negotiated my own writing goals and audience expectations by writing in a format that would appeal to a specific audience but using my own thoughts and ideas as the subject of the paper and evidence to back up my main idea. I have developed and engaged in the collaborative aspects of writing by participating in peer reviews and group projects, where I communicated with my peers and equally participated in an assignment. I have engaged in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary context and beyond by writing various papers on different writing formats and styles in different disciplines and genres. I have formulated and articulated a stance through and in my writing using my wording and writing style to state, explain, and provide evidence for my stance in my various papers. Finally, I have used online resources and databases to find sources to help back up my claims and stance in my writing projects. All in all, I believe I have practiced and improved each one of my learning objectives over the course of this semester.

My perception of what writing is and what it does has evolved over the course of this semester through me working on various new writing styles and formats throughout this semester. I was able to learn how writing is used in technical environments and what it is used for. Writing in engineering and other technical disciplines use writing to mostly communicate information, whether that means writing an analysis about how some new device functions or giving instructions on how to use technical devices. Technical writing differs from most other forms of writing as it is very brief and direct. Technical writing attempts to be as concise and informative as possible to allow readers to be able to understand critical information easily. Through this course, I have been able to learn about the use of writing in a different context than its use in most other forms of writing that I was previously aware of. This has helped change my perception of what writing is and what it does.

In closing, throughout this semester I have achieved my course learning objectives and evolved my perception of what writing is and does through the papers I have written over the course of the semester.
